Super foods

“Let food be your medicine and your medicine your food.”
Hippocrates 470 - 410 BC

As well as your physical well being the food you choose influences your emotions, your state of mind, your behaviour and even your IQ. The health giving properties of foods have been recognised since earliest time. Herbal and plant remedies have led the way to many of today’s pharmaceutical drugs. The most well Super foodsknown and used, Aspirin, was originally derived from Willow Bark. Event the great pharmacological leap forward of 20th Century, Penicillin, was extracted from a natural substance – common mould. Egyptian slaves were fed garlic on a daily basis to maintain their health. Only today has modern science proved the antibacterial; antifungal and antiviral properties of garlic.

Superfoods are foods which, not only taste great, provide great health giving and well being properties.

In the following menus we have aimed to combine three of the strongest influences on today’s eating patterns – health and nutrition; constantly evolving innovation and an expectation for quality and excellence. To make the process of selecting healthy menus simpler and more accessible for clients we have devised menus which combine all three elements.

We have tried to use, as many of “the super foods” as possible here are a few examples of why:

  1. Apples, high in pectin that protects against pollution by eliminating heavy metals; vitamin c which reduces cholesterol and malic & tartaric acids which relieve indigestion and breakdown fats, one a day might not keep the doctor away but two a day will help with arthritis and rheumatism.
  2. Avocado pears; rich in potassium which combats depression and poor digestion;; they are a source of healthy monounsaturated oil which is good for the circulation, the skin and for some, fertility, and contrary to some rumours this nutritional powerhouse is not fattening.
  3. Bananas; these are the perfect fast food high in potassium, zinc, iron, folic acid, calcium, vitamin b6 and fibre which is good for the digestion, essential for athletes and good for young and old.
  4. Cabbage; high in iron, chlorophyll, vitamin c and sulphur compounds, , vital for anaemia; stomach inflammation and ulcers; protection against stress, infection and heart disease.
  5. Carrots; super rich in beta-carotene: good for liver problems and also high in vitamins c and e which is good for circulation disease, chest infections, skin and eye problems, eaten two or three times a week they will not make you see in the dark but they will go a long way to cure what problems you have.
  6. Garlic; the king of healing plants; modern science proves it reduces cholesterol, lowers blood pressure, stops blood from clotting and improves circulation. It’s anti bacterial, anti fungal, anti viral, anti cancer and good for chest infections, it also helps keep vampire away.
  7. Oily fish; these are the only source of all the essential fatty acids are vital during pregnancy for the proper development of the brain in babies and infants. In children and adults they maintain brain functions and the oils help in the treatment of dyslexia and ADHD. They are also the most important source of vitamin d, essential for strong bones, hormone functions and great for relief of arthritis.
  8. Onions; they protect the circulatory system and are a powerful antibiotic. They’re good for chest, stomach and urinary infections and their diuretic activity helps with arthritis, rheumatism and gout. Research in America shows that half a raw onion a day raises the amount of good fats in the blood by 30%.

These examples show just some of what the “super foods” can do for your body. So that it is easier to read and understand them, rather than list them all on the menus we have highlighted some of the goodness values of the ingredients in the dishes and have written a glossary of the nutritional terms.
